Created to be one of the largest religious temples in the world, the Cathedral of Seville was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and an Asset of Outstanding Universal Value in 2010.
The Cathedral of Seville was built after the demolition of the old Aljama Mosque in Seville. De la construcción original se conservan el alminar (actual Giralda) y su famoso Patio de los Naranjos. It is located next to the Archivo de Indias, the Reales Alcázares and the famous Barrio de Santa Cruz. It is located next to the Archivo de Indias, the Reales Alcázares and the famous Barrio de Santa Cruz.
For more than 150 years the Christians used the Muslim temple as a place of worship, and it was in 1401 when the cathedral chapter decided to build a new temple. The building work continued until the 15th century, in fact until 1506. Tradition has it that the canons wanted to build a church so large ‘‘that those who see it finished may think us mad”.
During the Renaissance period, various outbuildings attached to the Gothic church were rebuilt, such as the Sacristy, the Chapter House and the Royal Chapel. It was also built the last part of the Giralda, by Hernán Ruíz, which, at 104 metres high, is visible from all parts of the city and is currently the most emblematic monument in Seville.
During our guided tour, our official guide will accompany you to discover all the secrets and the history of this magnificent architectural ensemble. Descubriremos algunos de los secretos que se guardan en su interior como los restos de Christopher Columbus or the greatest altarpiece of the Christian world.
After the visit, inside the Cathedral, we will have the opportunity to walk through the beautiful Patio de los Naranjos. In addition, if you wish, you can climb to the top of the Giralda to enjoy beautiful views of the city of Seville and take some excellent photographs to remember.
