Our excursion to Doñana will start from Seville in the company of one of our specialized guides for a day worth living. Our first stop will be the Sevillian town of Puebla del Río, gate of the Doñana wetland.
The ecosystem around the town is very important because is the only area in Doñana where birds can find water easily all year round, since a huge extension of rice fields grow every spring and summer here. Located in the heart of the marshes we will find and stop in Dehesa de Abajo, a beautiful place full of ancient olive trees and oaks, where we can enjoy the Europe’s largest white stork. Here visitors can also observe thousands of birds in their natural habitat like the greater flamingo, red kite, marsh harrier, cattle egret, white headed duck and even the unique Spanish Imperial Eagle.
Each year, the marshes house approximately 200,000 population of more than 300 species of birds, this is why Doñana is the most important natural space on the continent. This place also has the rice fields with the highest production in Spain and, due the heat and the water available that farmers pump every spring from the Guadalquivir river. The landscape here is so unique and stunning that many movies have choosen the area for filming, the latest was the famous Isla Mínima.
<After the Isla Mínima premiere, the visitors in Doñana coming from Spain increased a 20%>
The tour will continue until you reach the northern part of the Doñana National Park, arriving at the Village of El Rocío, known for its famous pilgrimage. An evocative village of other times in Spain where a typical atmosphere of other centuries is recreated, as if it were a journey through time with its sandy streets traveled by horses and people on foot.
We will visit its surroundings until we reach the famous Shrine of La Virgen del Rocío, to its hermitage of El Rocío, here more than one million people gather every year to participate in one of the most important religious pilgrimages on the planet.
After visiting the village, we will visit the impressive Palacio del Acebrón next to the Arroyo de la Rocina and to see another one of the Doñana ecosystems: the gallery forest. We will do a circular hiking route while interpreting animal trails and learn some indigenous plant species of this natural environment.
<Palacio del Acebrón is one of the four different palaces that stands nowadays inside the National Park>
At the end of this hike, we will take a short break for lunch tasting the typical cuisine of the area. Then we will go to the next ecosystem of our visit: the beach which spanning more then 30 kilometers, the coast of Doñana is the longest pristine beach in Spain. We will meet its peculiar transforming dunes where we can observe diverse flora and fauna characteristics found in this ecosystem.
In addition, if the weather is good, you can enjoy a refreshing bath that will be very rewarding, so do not forget your swimsuit in summer!
As dusk falls across this landscape, we will begin the return to Seville crossing, in our 4×4, the forested area of the Doñana National Park to be able to see some of the great mammals that inhabit the area and see the famous Iberian Lynx, emblem animal of Doñana.
Please note that this itinerary can be subjected to changes for improving your experiencce based on the movements of the fauna observed in the last days, and also with weather conditions or local authorities restrictions.
