To the south of the Sierra Nevada, where the mountains give way to valleys and ravines, La Alpujarra preserves one of Andalusia’s most distinctive ways of life. White villages nestled into the hillside, irrigation channels that still carry meltwater, and agricultural terraces that shape the landscape just as they have for centuries.
To the south of La Alpujarra, the route from Granada winds its way into the heart of the Barranco de Poqueira, crossing the historic Tablate Bridge, the ancient natural gateway to this mountainous region. From there, the landscape becomes more intimate: steeper slopes, villages perched above the valley and the constant sound of water flowing through the land.
In Pampaneira, the narrow streets retain the traditional architecture of La Alpujarra, with craft shops and cold-water fountains. In Pórtugos, the Fuente Agria spring emerges from the heart of the forest with its characteristic reddish colour. And in Trevélez, the highest village in La Alpujarra, the dry, clean mountain air continues to slowly cure the hams in drying rooms that open out onto the mountains.
The experience combines the local guide’s commentary with free time to stroll at your own pace, stop off in the villages and soak up the unique atmosphere of La Alpujarra. It is not a route to be covered, but a landscape to be explored.

- Cobbled streets and uneven surfaces: The villages retain their traditional layout of mountain streets, so comfortable, closed-toe footwear with good grip is required.
- Mountain climate: The altitude of the Sierra Nevada can lead to sudden changes in temperature throughout the day, so it is advisable to bring some light, warm clothing.
