The Costa Tropical and Nerja Cave from Granada

The Costa Tropical of Granada boasts, within just a few kilometres, a diversity of landscapes, history and Mediterranean light that few other Spanish coastlines can match. This full-day excursion takes in the coastline from the cliffs of Salobreña to the prehistoric depths of the Nerja Cave, in the province of Málaga, with a stop in Almuñécar, the oldest Phoenician town on the Andalusian coast.

The route begins with a scenic stop in Salobreña, a white village perched on a rocky promontory with a Moorish castle at the summit and unobstructed views of the Mediterranean. Its narrow streets and whitewashed houses retain the charm of traditional Andalusian architecture, making it one of the most picturesque villages on the Granada coast.

From there, the tour continues to Almuñécar, founded over 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians under the name Sexi. The itinerary includes the Majuelo Botanical Park, one of the most unique archaeological gardens in Andalusia, and San Miguel Castle, from whose ramparts you can look out over the entire bay and appreciate the strategic importance this town has held throughout history.

In the afternoon, the day draws to a close at the Nerja Caves, designated a Spanish Historic Heritage Site, where the stalactite and stalagmite formations reach sizes rarely found in Europe and whose cave paintings rank them amongst the continent’s most significant Palaeolithic sites. A spectacular underground world that puts the finishing touch to an excursion brimming with history, nature and some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the Andalusian Mediterranean.
