Discover masterpieces of modern art at your own pace
The Reina Sofía National Art Centre is recognised as one of the most important museums in the Spanish capital. It opened its doors in 1992 to house one of the finest collections of contemporary Spanish art. Today, it is one of the most visited museums in the country. It is housed in the former General Hospital of Madrid, a large 18th-century neoclassical building situated in the Atocha district.
All the pieces in the Reina Sofía Museum’s galleries date from 1881, the year of Pablo Picasso’s birth and the same date as those in the Prado. The museum’s permanent collection includes works by great 20th-century Spanish artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró. The museum houses such important works as “El Guernica” of Picasso, “Rostro del gran masturbador” of Salvador Dalí, “La mesa del músico” of Juan Gris, “Pintura – Caracol, mujer, flor, estrella” of Joan Miró.
Thanks to the audio guide, you can explore the museum at your own pace, stopping to look at the works that catch your eye and enjoying detailed explanations that will help you understand the context of each piece. This way of visiting is ideal for those who prefer a more personalised experience, without rushing and with complete freedom.
As well as the permanent collection, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions by contemporary national and international artists, which further enrich the visitor experience. The tour not only allows you to admire masterpieces, but also to understand the evolution of art in Spain during a period of profound social, political and cultural change.
Please note that the audio guide provided is not the museum’s official one, and you will need an internet connection to take this tour.
